Mirez Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 Took the arch liner off the front today to be met with this: Thats the whole front wing scuttle blocked,so any water that comes down (and take into account that the front screen and sunroof drain down into this area as well) has literally no where to go but out between the liner and wing. Tbe result is that you get this lovely build up of extreamly damp crud. When clean it looks like that, both sides were identical with roughly the same amount of crud build up. I managed to knock the majority into a bag and then jet out the remaining - there is a drain hole at the bottom and it also it open to the back of the wing where the door sits... or rather it should be. On a side note I weighed the bag at the end... 2.04Kg!!! Wonder if I can get back to that magical 50mpg now? Quote

Well its interesting that my last Mk2 had rust starting in exactly this area on the passenger side, I never took the liners off that one and I assumed it had had a scratch/knock at some point hence the rust but on reflection it may well have been from this. So how could it be stopped from happening again then? Can it be poked out from underneath without removing the inner covers? Will check my MK 1 for similar.H Quote
Mirez Posted August 14, 2009 Author Report Posted August 14, 2009 So how could it be stopped from happening again then? Can it be poked out from underneath without removing the inner covers? Will check my MK 1 for similar.H I can't see a way of stopping it happening all together, the drain hole simply isn't large enough - I guess you could poke something up the hole but it was reasonably compacted so I doubt you'd get it all just doing that - as you look at the pictures, the drain hole is on the left side, so you wouldn't get around and to the back on the right side either but removing the covers is an easy job. I had the wheel off for something else but it could probably be left on but on full lock - its then just 4 thorx bolts to get it half off - which is all that needs to happen. Quote
